Session 4: The Interviews

This session was structured differently to others we’ve had in the past, and I was definitely quite excited for it. While I had high hopes for the interviews, I definitely didn’t expect to have such amazing and free flowing conversations with so many of my classmates. My plans from creating these questions to create a conversational tone and use rebuttal questions based on that panned out really nicely and overall, I’m super happy with my last ever media session!

To begin the session, we looked at a brief overview of fashion journalism and fashion photojournalism, which has the ability for stories to create a narrative in conjunction with the text. We then moved straight into the interviews. I was quite lucky to have a good mix of people from different countries and pathway choices.

The interviews started off quite unfortunately, with the first girl I was paired with not being super responsive and also have bas connectivity. She also didn’t come prepared with questions and spent the time we were together looking on Moodle for them, rather than answering the questions I was asking her. Due to this, I messaged Carlyn and was super grateful to have Karen moved into my group, as we’ve spoken and worked together a lot previously, often being put into groups where we’d be the only ones speaking. I already knew a bit about Karen, but it was fascinating to not only learn more about her, but also her fashion thoughts and opinions. We had a very good conversation and the interview showed great personality, personalised answers and answers from a design student, who’s goals in life are quite far off from my own.

I then spoke to Mariia. We also had a really nice conversation and she provided some good answers that felt familiar to my own in ways as she’s also a business student.

My final interview was with Arina and we also found we had quite a bit in common when it came to our business preferences. The interview had a nice conversational feel to it and many of the questions redirected towards confidence and self-growth throughout the course which I’d love to incorporate into my article.

Notes I made during the interviews

Despite a rocky start, I overall had amazing conversations and interviews with these girls and feel quite pleased with the amount of information I was able to gather. I’m looking forward to writing up my article, as writing is one of my hobbies and really focus on creating a story with not only my words but my graphics too. This was a really great session to have some productive conversations with my classmates and work on our communication skills as well.

After the interviews, we also spent some time looking at the importance of visual communication in layouts and making considered choices when it came to aspects like fonts and images. I’m a little worried going into the SDS about creating the layout of my page, as I want it to come across professional and like something that could actually be published in a magazine.

Going forward with the SDS task of creating an article using the content we got out of today’s session, I plan on using In Design for my double page layout, as while we were learning about it, I did remark how useful it would be to create article-like pages. I also need to come up with a colour theme for my pages, as well as choose fonts and graphics that match the vibe I want for my article, as well as the people I interviewed. I plan on using all 3 of the girls I interviewed in my article, and center my narrative focus around themes of sustainability, coursework, personal growth, and possibly even fashion from different countries. Before beginning my article properly though, I want to create a couple of pages of research and brainstorming so I have my layout and content ideas all set and ready to go.
